New Page Title

Split window bus, some might say that it´s just a design mistake but when God created this car it was not only design to take care of,
it is a functionary car with many possibilities and a GREAT design.
You either love it or not.
I love everything about VW Type 2!

This page will describe the types of VW buses made from 1950 to 1967.

The types have a model code and explanation to make it easier for differing between the cars.

Type 211-216: Kastenwagen, delivery van with or without rear window(s) and or without slide doors. Also called panel van or "Umpipakettiauto"(finnish),means box car with closed cargo transportation room.
Some were delivered with a highened roof for greater transportation area and the cargo roof stretched over the cab. They were called Grossraum-Kastenwagen in Germany.Their codes are 212-213.Further explanations on technical datas.

Type 221-226:Kleinbus, a bus with passenger area in the rear room, with 3 side windows and one or two side doors. The car had two seats in front and 4 to 7 seats on sofas in the rear part. These cars could also be converted to camping cars. The cars were mostly delivered in two-tone colors with the second color from the mid-line list.Further explanations will arrive. Also called 11 or 14 window due to model type.

Type 231-236:Kombi, a combination of passenger transportation car and a delivery van. These were registered for 5 persons, 2 front and 3 rear, but more seats could be mounted.Delivered in one or two color tones. The first Kombi ran off the line in 1951,the last was made in 1966.

Type 241-248:Sonderbus,the luxury model of VW type 2.This car was equipped with 7 or 9 seats and could be converted for camping use.The car had in normal shape roof windows and sunroof, but could also be delivered without these extras.A Sonderbus is also called 21-window or 23-window due to the side windows´ and roof windows´ number. They were painted in special two-tone colors only for this type.

Type 251:Sonderbus,walk-through model 7 seater and left hand steering.

Type 261-264:Pritschenwagen,a single cab pick-up with two seats and big open cargo floor with or without covering chapel. They were made from 1952 to 1966,equipped mostly with 1200cc engine but later versions had 1500cc motors.Their loading capacity were higher than any car in this class and they worked well for many years in companies.A pick-up has a standard equipment like the panel vans and is not a luxury one,but who needs luxury when just doing their work?:-)
Type 265-267.Doppelkabine.A double cab pick-up made for both person transportation and cargo loads. They had one or two extra doors in the lengthened cab.The double cab was first running off line in 1956 from the VW factory, but also earlier doubles are seen, the oldest from 1953.These are in fact special made by Binz,a carosserie factory in Germany which made on demands greater cabs and fitted them with extra seats. It is made on a single-cab bottom and the cab is enlarged. They are not "real" double cabs but although described on the double cab section. These Binz cabs (1953-56) are rare today and most are brokedown or scrapped.Their biggest use was among companies which had a use for both persons and cargo at same time. The last ran off line in 1967.

Type 271-273.Krankenwagen.I guess the name says what it´s used for.A kombi or kleinbus converted and fitted with emergency equipments and used frequently as emergency vehicle by fire departments and military instances. The first ambulance was made 1952, they were made on demands by Binz and VW together until 1966.They were rather quickly taken off duty due to higher weight and weak perfomance. No data when the last was built.

Type 281-284:Kleinbus,with sunroof and small roof windows on top.7 seater with walk-through apartment.

Type 29:Prototyp.The first trial set of cars made in 1949 before Type2 was presented to world. Some cars saved in the VW museum in Wolfsburg but no cars have been seen in duty outside the factory. The characteristics of these almost same as the early panel vans.Engines used are the 1131cc 25 hp,same as in early buses and beetles (type 1).
